Some of the dumbest advice I ever received.

Years ago during my corporate days, I worked with a guy who had the saying, “You can sleep in on Sundays.”  I was young and had goals, dreams and aspirations. Naively, I started to live by that motto too, which was one of the dumbest pieces of advice I’d ever received.

Most days, I’d be at the office from 7 am to 11 pm or even later. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that on more than a few occasions I’d sleep for a couple of hours on the sofa in the office only to wake up and get back to work in the wee hours of the morning.

Although that type of schedule is a whole lot easier to keep when you're young(er), I learned the hard way that taking really good care of myself and my health is one of the most important things I can do.  I also learned that no one will look out for you better than you.

A good night of sleep is one of the best things you can do for your mind, body and spirit. Sleep is so important.  Experts say having a bedtime ritual can help you fall asleep and stay asleep.
I’ve come to cherish my sleep and look forward to my bedtime ritual.

Here are some of the things I like to do when getting ready for bed:

  • Plan my “to do” list for the next day.
  • Take a quick warm shower or, if I have time, a hot epson salt and lavender bath.
  • Put on clean, comfy, feminine PJ’s or a night gown.
  • Enjoy a hot cup of tea (especially in the winter).
  • Reflect on my day.
  • Write in my gratitude journal.
  • Climb into bed, prop myself up with a mountain of pillows, read and snuggle.
